Technologies in the Film and TV Industries

Consumer Products - The use of technology at home, e.g. cameras, editing software. Most people now usually have one of these in their house and these, especially a camera are now scene as household items. However because of smart phone cameras getting better, people are feeling less of a need for cameras, however because of YouTube becoming such a big industry and allowing you to make videos from the comfort of home, editing software and cameras are becoming more of household items more than ever before.

Satellite and Cable - The technology and companies behind satellite and cable TV: Virgin, BT, Sky. Virgin are the main company for cable TV. and WiFi. Cable is underground, however is not easily accessible because it is usually only in cities and sometimes towns because of the amount it costs to put in and also would take some time, blocking roads that people use everyday. Terrestrial is above the ground, so in something like telephone poles, most people usually have this as it runs through most of the UK and will come from certain places where it is all stored. Satellite is beamed from outer space down to your homes. Sky is known for having this and the have 1 or 2 satellites in outer space. Rupert Murdoch has bid £11.7 billion for sky.

Analog and Digital:

  • Old analog signal was sold to the government and switched off for public use in around about 2007.
  • Digital switch over
  • Sky and Virgin both offer digital packages which all come in different levels, meaning the more you want, the more you pay. E.g. If you want to watch Sky Sports, you have to pay extra monthly for this service. However with Freeview, you don't pay anything, and have to just set up a signal to connect to Freeview, and all the shows on their, are what you can watch.

Internet and interactivity:
You can watch TV and films through the internet on things such as: Netflix, Now TV and YouTube. These are all legal ways to watch films and shows, however you can use use websites that put movies and shows on their website so they can be seen without paying, however this is illegal. However, sometimes with services like Now TV, the signal from your internet might not be very strong as they use up a lot of internet, so it can cause this to create a weak signal, not allowing you to watch things in HD, and can cause over devices to work a lot slower.

A way to interact with you TV would be with your TV remote or simply the buttons on the side of the TV. One more way you can interact with your TV would be with the four coloured buttons on your remote, e.g. you can sometimes press the red button to donate money when it is children in need.

High Definition and 3D - High definition allows the viewer to see the video a lot clearer and in better resolution. Throughout the years HD Has become a lot better, starting off with 720, moving onto 1080 to 4K and 8K Ultra HD. These last to would be typically used in cinemas as many computers wouldn't be able to handle this and because of the high resolution, it is not as obtainable at home. 3D has also progressed in the years, from only being used in cinemas, to now being used at home with TVs, however the cost of these can be a lot more and sometimes aren't used and for some people are seen as useless.

Pay Per View - This is typically with Boxing at Sky and as it says, you pay a one of payment to watch a boxing match, or you can pay a certain amount a year to watch the matches, without having to pay a certain amount each time.

On Demand Viewing - On demand viewing allows the user to watch whatever TV shows and movies at specific times. This is typically used within Sky and on TV, but has been moved onto household computers now, showing the technology is advancing.

Streaming Content - This is something such as Twitch, where you can stream you're content of whatever you are currently doing, and broadcast to whoever will click onto your stream, you can also stream with YouTube as well, but the biggest streaming site for gaming is Twitch. You see the stream as it happens on the hosts screen, however there is sometimes and delay set on the stream, which makes it harder for the host to reply to the comments, but allows the stream to move a lot smoother, and doesn't create much lag.

Digital Recorders - Digital recorders are used to record films and shows for later dates. This is used by a lot of companies like Sky and Virgin. This is very handy if you aren't able to view the show at the time, you can view it when it is best for you. You used to only be able to record a few shows at a time, but as time goes on, technology progresses and you are able to record more and store more for later dates.
